A year ago I ran into two people in Davis Sq. and I thought they looked especially cool. At the time I hadn't yet tried asking strangers if I could draw them, but these two were so neat that I screwed up my courage and went for it. Thankfully they consented. It was only later that I realized that they were both wearing scarves with nightmarishly complicated patterns.
I picked away at these drawings at least once a week in small bites over a period of several months, and I finally finished today. Now the tough part will be finding them again so I can show them the finished product.
His scarf drove me absolutely nuts. This one piece of clothing took about 80% of the total drawing time for both of these portraits.
I had a much easier time drawing her clothes, but for some reason every time I tried to draw her face she looked a little bit mournful. In person she was quite cheerful, though.
I tried a lot of variations on different colors before finally settling on an end product. Below are just a few of the giant mountain of steps near the end:
As always these are pretty complex in outline mode, but the scarves made them borderline impossible to send to Photoshop.
